Staircases require wit and ingenuity. An exciting stair celebrates the openings between floors – the vertical volume of the stair hall. It introduces a dynamic break in the flow of space whether economically squeezed into a chimney alcove, or spread out in a display of opulence.
Little was left of the original stair from and earlier demolition at Standen House, Wiltshire, apart from some fragments of carving and a hint of the configuration. The drawing is a conjectural design based on detail from similar examples and included all of the extant remains. (For Brinton Associates)
