Moor Lane Aubourn

Vernacular building is best handled by an architect with a restraining hand and a specialist builder with a knowledge of the local style. In Norfolk, that may be a vivid orange brick and pantile; in the Lake District, fieldstone and slate; and in London, brick and white render, with its roof hidden behind a parapet. Graham Bingley, a builder with traditional skills, commissioned us to design his own house as a farm group – basically, two rooms each side of the stairs, with an “outshut” for a kitchen and a stable attached for his daughter’s horse.
