Shakespeare recess, Sir John Soane’s Museum

George Bullock’s bust of Shakespeare sat on a shelf in a closet in the staircase of Soane’s great staircase in the Museum at Lincoln’s Inn Fields. War damage had ruined much of the panelling. The curator, Peter Thornton, commissioned us to study the original sketches by Joseph Gandy and others and detail the restoration of the panelling, plasterwork and decorations. The recess’s newly painted ‘Siena marble’ colours were discovered under the Victorian varnish in the adjacent stair hall.

Joinery: John Graves.
Conservation: Conservation Management.
